Gov of Pak may keep Petrol price unchanged for the next month

It is expected that the government of Pakistan may not change, or only minimal price adjustments may occur to petrol prices next month. The government of Pakistan has not given the relief that people hoped for regarding petrol prices. Globally, petrol prices are down, and now they are increasing gradually. Petroleum prices have gone down since March 2025 due to the US's surprise decision regarding China and tariffs. The US, on April 9th, announced that they are going to put tariffs on countries due to trade deficit issues for the US. Now every country is dealing with the US about a trade deal, including Pakistan.

Now the latest price of oil suggests that Brent Crude is averaging around USD 64 per barrel, which is a sharp decline compared to last year. However, the government of Pakistan is not adjusting the price because of the FBR shortfall in taxes, Balochistan development, and to increase revenue. Therefore, there is no major or no reduction in petrol prices, as next FY the government of Pakistan might increase the petroleum levy to beyond PKR 100.

It is not confirmed that the government this time will reduce the price of petrol because the government of Pakistan does not want the current account deficit to increase, and they do not want another high import bill due to a reduction in petrol prices. Therefore, it is a possibility that the government will increase taxes or petroleum levies on petrol products so that the current account deficit and high bill remain in check. Moreover, the FBR is also facing a shortfall in collecting the desired agreed target set by Pakistan and the IMF. It is also likely that Pakistan will reduce the prices of petroleum products, but not that much, as it could help Pakistan to collect the taxes and achieve those figures, which are agreed upon with the IMF.
